Walkinstown

Walkinstown (Irish, Baile Bhailcín) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, which incorporates the area of Greenhills (Irish, Na Glaschnoic or Na Cnoic nGlas), and one area of Ballymount, which is divided in to three areas, is situated on the Southside of the city. It borders Crumlin, Drimnagh, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Bluebell and some smaller estates. Its Dublin post code is 12.

Name and History

The area was a dairy farm until house building began in the 1950's. Building ended in the area in the 1970's. At that stage most of the available land was built on. The origin of the name was Wilkinstown - named after a tenant farmer who lived in the area in the 15th Century. Over the centuries the name became corrupted to Walkinstown.

Local landmarks

One of the key features of the area is the Walkinstown Roundabout, or Walkinstown Cross, a major junction which serves seven major local roads - the Greenhills Road towards Tallaght, Ballymount Road towards Ballymount and the M50, Walkinstown Avenue towards Ballyfermot, Walkinstown Road towards Drimnagh, Cromwellsfort Road towards Kimmage and Crumlin, Bunting Road towards Crumlin and St Peter's Road towards Greenhills and Templeogue.

There is also a well-known Catholic Church, Walkinstown Church or the Assumption of St. Mary, near the Long Mile Road, and a library on Percy French Road. One particular part of Walkinstown, north of Cromwellsfort Road and east of Bunting Road is known as the "Musical Roads" because of the eponymous sources, e.g. Count John McCormack.

Walkinstown houses six and a half pubs and they are (1) the Cherrytree and (2) the Kestrel House, located on opposite sides of Walkinstown Roundabout, (3) the Halfway House, which is at the end of Walkinstown Road, opposite Superquinn, (4) The Black Forge, (5) The Elanora, or The Lady Elanora, (6) The Traders, which is situated in the Greenhills area of Walkinstown, and to end this on a half note, The Submarine Bar has its main entrance on Cromwellsfort Road.

The Superquinn supermarket on Walkinstown Road was once the location of Walkinstown House, the family home of the Flanagan family, including the infamous "The Bird Flanagan" [1].

Administration

In administrative terms, Walkinstown is in the extreme south-west of Dublin City Council and in local government elections is part of the Crumlin/Kimmage Ward. As of 2005, the local elected reps on Dublin City Council are Charlie Ardagh (Fianna Fáil), Eric Byrne (Labour), Joan Collins (Independent), Anne-Marie Martin (Fine Gael) and Robert Smithers (Sinn Féin).

Walkinstown is part of the Dublin South Central Dáil consitutency. The elected TD's for the area are Gay Mitchell (Fine Gael), Aengus Ó Snodaigh (Sinn Féin), Seán Ardagh (Fianna Fáil), Mary Upton (Labour) and Michael Mulcahy (Fianna Fáil).

rip off????????????????
The text of this article is a direct rip off of the wikipedia article!

Firstly, wikipedia is not acknowledged.

Secondly, surely "Dubliners" could come up with a more comprehensive article than simply ripping off someone else.

Walkinstown Park
Hi Don Ryan here, and I stumbled on this site by default. I remember Noreen and Ida Goodwin from Walkinstown Park, but perhaps Karen and Patricia are younger sisters? There were also Morrisons, Mangans, Buckleys, O'Connors, McGarrys, Dunnes, Murphys, etc. I now live in Woodside Rathfarnham, so compared to James and Paul Murphy (who moved to Australia), I guess I hardly moved very far!! Interested to know where the 'Park' dispora all ended up?

Don Ryan
Hello Don,

I can understand you don't remember me I think I am a few years younger than you. I am a sister to Noreen and Eda, Eda passed away a few years ago. She was only 51 years. Noreen lives in Kildare. As for myself I have lived in Holland for the past 34 years, also not as far as the murphy's. I think a lot about Walkinstown, I have very good memories of a care free childhood. We had so much freedom to play. Not like my grand children. You have to watch their every move. I remember your Parents well. They were lovely people, very gentle. I remember your older sister married a soldier. Am I right.I have been home lately and visited Walkinstown Park. But most of the people have or died or moved away. Which is usually the case. Have you married with a family yourself. Thatᄡs it for the moment.

regards Karen

Hi Karen,
I vaguely remember a younger sibling, but back then, a few years made a vast difference. Great to hear from you, and please pass my regards to Noreen. Very sorry to hear about Ida. She was my first 'crush', and she has often popped into my head over the years, but back then she probably never noticed!!
Over the years I travelled to Holland many times on business (I was an European director), and we also brought our children, and in recent years, our grandchild, to the 'Eftling Park'.
I have 3 children (son and two daughters)Both girls married, but my son has no signs of settling down. I spent the past 25 years running the Irish division of a multinational, and last year bought the company and changed to Ryan Food Services. We also have another holding group called Ryan Busness Group, involved in the wholesale distribution of computer consumables throughout Europe and beyond. I probably planned to retire, but looks a tad unlikely in the next few years.
Your Dad would take us shooting over in the Greenhills, but I can not recall what exactly we were hunting. It was a 22 rifle, so probably just tin cans!!
Where are you in Holland ..... and why??
My direct email is don@ryanfoodservices.ie
Drop a line and maybe a few photos of your gang?
Cheers, Don
